Match Report

Redcar Athletic came close on just 4 minutes to taking the lead in this important game which they needed to come out at the end with at least a point to keep their title dreams alive for the final match of the season. Mitchell Morris lifted ball forward was chested down by Michael Woodhose 20 yards out, who then played a quick 1-2 with Andy Jennings before turning and firing in a dipping shot which struck the outside of the left hand post with home keeper Mark Walker struggling to reach it. In the 21st minute Joe Bennett's ball from deep in his own half was flicked over the Richmond Town defence by Michael Woodhouse neatly into the path Andy Jennings run in the penalty area, but the striker was thwarted at the very last by keeper Mark Walker's outstretched boot that dinked the ball away. Although Andy Jennings ended up on the floor the referee waved away his penalty appeal deeming the challenge made by the keeper as being fair. Just a minute later Redcar Athletic's turn to breathe a huge sigh of relief when Scott Ryan's cross from the left wing was fired just a few inches wide of the left post with a shot on the run by Kalumn Holbrook. On 27 minutes Richmond Town keeper Mark Walker was fortunate not to be sent off when he tried to usher out Jack Simpson's overhit right wing cross,  only to send Michael Woodhouse crashing to floor after the Redcar Athletic midfielder had nipped in to steal the ball then was about to run in on the Richmond Town goal. Another referee might have brought out a red but fortunately for the young keeper only the yellow shown by tonight's referee. The game seemed to be heading to half time goalless but with 4 minutes remaining out the blue Richmond Town's Ben Darville burst into the Redcar Athletic penalty area before firing in a hard drive which keeper Will Lawrence did well to palm away to the right hand side, but defender Jordan Kirk slid in rashly to connect with the loose ball only to bring striker Chris Pattison crashing to the floor and concede a penalty. KALUMN HOLBROOK fired hard and low into the left hand corner just out of reach of Will Lawrence's outstretched hand to give Richmond Town the half time lead and leaving Redcar Athletic with the task of finding an equaliser to keep their dreams of the title alive.

           Richmond Town 1 v 0 Redcar Athletic

Richmond Town let Redcar Athletic know almost straight away in the 2nd half what their plan was and basically it was 10 men behind the ball with Ben Darville being left up on his own. But despite defending in such high numbers it took only 9 minutes for Redcar Athletic to find a way through this defensive barrirer when Jordan Rivis latched onto a great pass from Jordan Kirk and dribbled his way into the penalty area before he was cleary brought down by Jason Newell. But this golden opportunity to equalise was not taken when Andy Jennings slotted his low spot kick past the right hand post with keeper Mark Walker in the process of starting to go the other way. On 65 minutes Redcar Athletic won a corner kick on the left and before Joe Bennett had even stepped back to take 3 Richmond Town players surrounded and jostled Andy Jennings believing he was the target of the incoming ball. However the ball flew over the 4 of them and coming in behind them was JORDAN RIVIS who planted his gift of a free header into the net for that all important equaliser. Richmond Town did not change tactics and although Redcar Athletic continued to dominate possession the only real chance of finding a winner came in the 72nd minute when a Jordan Rivis 20 yard free kick was tipped over the crossbar by keeper Mark Walker. So Redcar Athletic ended the match with the minimum 1 point they at least required in order to go into the final game with their title hopes still intact. Now however it is a case of "Win or Bust" against Gateshead Leam Rangers as a draw or defeat hands the title Cleator Moor Celtic if they in turn most likely beat bottom team Coxhoe Athletic. Also finishing 2nd will not guarantee promotion to the Northern League, therefore a win is doubly important.
