Match Report

Redcar Athletic started confidently and put Darlington Reserves under pressure with some good quick plays. In the 11th minute Adam Preston picked up a pass from Sam Webster centrally 25 yards out from goal, sidestepped a challenge before firing in a rising shot which flew just a foot wide of the left hand post. Out of the blue in the 13th minute Darlington Reserves winger Callum Webster was played in down the left wing and his cross into the box was met with a header by GARETH McMAHON which looped over Redcar Athletic keeper Jordan Lowrie in the left hand corner of the net to give the home side the lead against the run of play. Redcar Athletic went straight out in search of an equaliser and looked nailed on to get it in the 17th minute. Bryan Stewart started the move playing a superb ball over to the right for Adam preston and he drilled it across the 6 yard box perfectly for Jordan Rivis coming in at the left post to seemingly finish it off, only for keeper Joseph Forbes to pull off an amazing reflex save to somehow turn the shot round the left hand post, much to the sheer disbelief of the entire away side and their travelling army of supporters. But despite their disbelief, the away supporters gave the home keeper a well deserved round of applause. Just a minute later Jordan Rivis was put in the clear by Adam Preston's superb pass but the in-form midfielder cum makeshift striker, fluffed his lines by chipping the ball just inches off the ground straight to a grateful Joseph Forbes, who had already started his dive towards the Redcar Athletic player. In the 20th minute Jordan Rivis was tripped in full flight as he looked set to break into the Darlington Reserves penalty area, but from the free kick from inside the "D", Adam Preston curled the ball low inches wide of the right hand post. Redcar Athletic seemed to have all the momentum but within the space of 2 minutes their teamwork and play fell apart. This allowed Darlington Reserves to be more confident and they went looking for 2nd goal but it took until the 39th minute before they could get an effort on target. It came when Thomas Young played in Lee Hume 35 yards out and he fired in a hip-high fierce drive which forced keeper Jordan Lowrie down to his right to fist the ball away. The half time whistle could not come quick enough for the travelling army of supporters as they saw in front of them the Redcar Athletic players arguing among themselves rather than getting on with the game.

    H-T  Darlington Reserves 1 v 0 Redcar Athletic

The half time break managed to calm tempers and Redcar Athletic came back out as a team with a focus on the job ahead. In the 52nd minute Stuart Browne's high cross from the right into Darlington Reserves penalty area was met with a towering header by Jordan Rivis, which crashed off the top of the crossbar. Despite having the majority of the possession for the next 20 minutes Redcar Athletic could not find that equalising goal and so in the 72nd minute Manager Steve Connolly made a double substitution by bringing on Daniel Drazdauskas and Joel Callender for Adam Preston and Bryan Stewart. in the very next minute Redcar Athletic won corner on the right which was swung high into the Darlington Reserves penalty area by Sam Webster and JOEL CALLENDER raced in to meet it and with his very first touch of the ball in the game, powered his header into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Redcar Athletic now had the scent of blood and went for the kill. On 75 minutes Michael Woodhouse went on a run from his own half and both teams seemed to stand still and watch him until finally he was forced to doubleback on himself on the edge of Darlington Reserves penalty area by defenders Derek Cooper -Wade and Anthony Verity. But Michael Woodhouse then fed the ball to Joel Callender, who took a touch before firing in a blazing 25 yard shot, which keeper Joseph Forbes did brilliantly well to get to his left to tip over the bar.  The lead in the game for Redcar Athletic came via route one on 79 minutes when a big kick upfield by keeper Jordan Lowrie sailed over the Darlington Reserves defence and SAM WEBSTER raced onto it on the right before cutting to the edge of the penalty area and then curling the ball high around keeper Joseph Forbes dive into the top right hand corner of the net for a spectacular finish. Redcar Athletic were now in full flow and a minute later good 2 way interplay between Jordan Rivis and Daniel Drazdauskas created another oppotunity for a pot at goal for Joel Callender who let fly first time from 25 yards but his rising effort flew a foot wide of the  right hand post. With 5 minutes remaining Sam Webster dribbled his way into the left hand side of the penalty area and was sent crashing to the floor by a sliding challenge from defender Thomas Young to which the referee immediately blew and pointed to the spot. JORDAN RIVIS took responsibilty for the penalty and despite taking only a 2 step run, fired in his penalty with a lot of venom in it, into the right hand side of the net. Redcar Athletic weren't finished with the scoring and made it 4-1 right on full time when a ball down the left was picked up by Joel Callender and he found DANIEL DRAZDAUSKAS with a low cross into the penalty area, who calmly picked his spot to slot home past keeper Joseph Forbes.
