Match Report

Redcar Athletic sensationally knocked out North Riding Cup holders Whitby Town of this season's competition in front of a bumper crowd at a blustery BM Bi-Folding Doors Stadium Green Lane.

Redcar Athletic knew they had to soak up pressure early on and set their stall up to do so against Evo-Stick Premier Division side Whitby Town. In the 9th minute Whitby Town had the ball in the Redcar Athletic net when keeper Jordan Lowrie's pushed away Kieran Weledji's cross but although it deflected in off Matthew Tymon, he had strayed into an offside position and the goal was immediately ruled out. On 18 minutes Whitby Town's Cameron Salkeld ouutpaced Redcar Athletic defender Jordan Kirk to burst into the right hand side of the penalty area but his low powerful shot was parried well to safety by keeper Jordan Lowrie. In the 22nd minute the ball fell into the path of Whitby Town midfielder Adam Gell 35 yards out and he chanced his arm with the gusting wind behind it helping it, the ball sailed over keeper Jordan Lowrie's head and crashed off the top of Redcar Athletic's crossbar. With the strong wind in their faces it was all about getting to half time now on level terms to giving Redcar Athletic a chance of getting a decent result on the night but it was to get even better than that. After a good move down the left, Sam Webster forced Whitby Town into conceding a corner kick in the 33rd minute of the game. Bryan Stewart curled the ball superbly high into the Whitby Town penalty area for JORDAN RIVIS to race in to power a downward header into the net to send the large home contingent of the crowd into raptures. Whitby Town mustered up one more chance 5 minutes before the break when Cameron Salkeld got possession of the ball on the right 20 yards out but he fired his low shot across the face of goal and Redcar Athletic walked off at half-time with their lead intact.

Whitby Town found it really heavy going in the 2nd half against a well organised Redcar Athletic side and their best chance from open play came in the 50th minute when the ball came once again to Cameron Salkeld 20 yards out from goal, but he blazed his shot high over the bar. On 58 minutes Redcar Athletic were awarded a free kick 45 yrads out from Whitby Town's goal and Joe Bennett, with the wind behind him decided to have a go but his effort just dipped too late, going 6 inches over the bar. On 70 minutes the ball came to Jordan Rivis in acres of space 5 yards inside his own half and he curled a high wind assisted towards the Whitby Town goal but keeper Daniel Dixon, had got his positioning correct and managed to grab the ball above his head to prevent the midfielder from netting his 2nd goal of the night. In the 76th minute Whitby Town's Kyle Fryatt was adjudged by the referee to have been fouled by Redcar Athletic defender David Abel as both stretched for the ball in the Teessiders penalty area. Ex-professional striker John Campbell stepped up to take the spot kick, only to the howls of dismay of the Whitby Town supporters and sheer shrieks of delight of the Redcar Athletic fans to plant his shot against the crossbar. The Redcar Athletic finally managed to clear the ball away from the penalty miss after it bounced and curled erractically all over their box in the swirling wind. It was now dawning on the Whitby Town supporters that they were heading towards the exit door and the cup holders did so without threatening the Redcar Athletic goal in the remaining 14 minutes plus an added 5 minutes of injury time. On the full time whistle every Redcar Athletic player and supporter alike punched the air in celebration at what must be the club's greatest ever victory, as Whitby Town play in the Evo-Stick Premier League, which is 4 divisions above the  Wearside League which the victorious Teessiders play in.
