Match Report

Redcar Athletic came close to taking the lead in the 2nd minute after been awarded a free kick 12 yards out on the right hand side Jordan Rivis went for goal curling the ball over everyone in the Wolviston box only to see it come back off the angle of the left hand post and crossbar, in almost the idendentical spot as to where he hit with a 30 yard shot against Richmond Town on Wednesday night. Wolviston basically came to defend and constantly had 11 men behind the ball which worked well for half an hour as they nullified Redcar Athletic's attacks in numbers. But Wolviston were conceding too many fouls in breaking up Redcar Athletic's play and one on the half hour mark was to cost them dear. Redcar Athletic were awarded a free kick 20 yards out from goal when Andrew McGirr slid in recklessly on Sam Webster and Bryan Stewart curled the ball teasingly from the free kick in the penalty area for DAVID ABEL to run in to place a header past keeper Christopher Davidson into the right hand side of the net. It was redemption for the defender as it was his unforced own goal which handed Wolviston victory in the reverse fixture last month. It got even better for the Redcar Athletic defender 6 minutes later when his ball over the top of Wolviston defence put SAM WEBSTER in the clear, who raced into the penalty area before calmly placing his shot low past keeper Christopher Davidson into the net. Redcar Athletic were motoring now putting Wolviston really under the cosh. on 40 minutes Joe Bennett deep cross from left wing was headed back across the box by David Abel and Sam Webster's downward header looked booked for the bottom left hand corner of the net but keeper Christopher Davidson, who is more agile than his massive frame would suggest, managed to get down to his right just in time to claw the ball away. In the final minute of the half Michael Woodhouse ran from halway towards the edge of the Wolviston's penalty area before playing in Sam Webster and his goalbound shot was blocked by defender Billy Crookston the ricochet came out David Able, who fired in a rising shot shot which brought out a great save form Chris Davidson who flung himself up to his right to tip the ball away from danger.

                H-T  Redcar Athletic 2 v 0 Wolviston

Wolviston created nothing going forward in the 2nd half and home keeper Jordan Lowrie didn't have a shot to save. But all credit to Wolviston defensively as they stoically protected keeper Christopher Davidson from Redcar Athletic having shots to save as well right up until the 78th minute of the game, despite the amount of possession of the ball the home side had. Redcar Athletic actually had the ball in the net on 78 minutes when Daniel Drazdauskas got onto the end of Mitchell Morris's low cross 8 yards out to stab home but the striker had just mistimed his run and the goal was ruled out for offside. With 5 minutes remaining David Abel hooked a ball over the top of Wolviston's defence which Jordan Rivis raced onto and as he fired in his shot from 12 yards, which was curling wide of the left hand post, he was tripped by the boot of keeper Chris Davidson. The referee awarded Redcar Athletic a penalty despite Jordan Rivis having already firing in his shot and booked keeper Chris Davidson. Jordan Rivis took responsibility to take the penalty as Bryan Stewart who netted Redcar Athletic's last penalty had been substituted 4 minutes previously. Christopher Davidson dived to his left and managed to pump Jordan Rivis's spot kick into the ground which then put just enough spin on the ball which made it bounce up and go round the post by a matter of an inch or two. A bit of pride for the Wolviston keeper to take home, but although not the best of games Redcar Athletic and their supporters were happy enough with the 5th clean sheet in arow plus the 3 points that keeps them top of the league.
